Hi,
I’m currently working on a project with the French rail operator aiming at tracking the
trains thanks to GNSS, INS and railway digital map fusion. The system works better when
the train moves on curved tracks with a low radius of curvature. Considering that the
tracks are in a straight line when the radius of curvature is above a defined threshold
(such as 10 km) has anyone tried to identify the France and European longest straight
stretch of railway line from OpenRailwayMap data?
Regards,
Pierre d’Harcourt

I can't tell you Europe, but in the United States according to Trains
Magazine it is the route into the interior to Hamlet North Carolina from
the port of Wilmington North Carolina.

Hi,
This is interesting. When tracking the trains, do you follow a position based on the
one-dimensional railway coordinate system (position in hectometres) as well?

Hi,
We do usually express the position in a geodetic system with INS and GNSS fusion. But for
railway application we are working on following a position based on the one-dimensional
railway coordinate system. The system estimates the distance travelled since a given
moment. One of the main goal of the project is to improve such an estimation with
map-matching allowing map corrections and giving the right track. Such a map-matching
requires a more detailed model of the tracks than ORM. However I find ORM very
interesting, with an amazing degree of coverage of the world railway network. I've
tried computing those longest straight stretch of railway line with a criteria based on a
radius of curvature above 10 km and a difference of heading between the two ends under 1
degree:
- The longest European Straight line would be about 50 km between Bucarest and Fetesti.
- The longest French straight line would be about 35 km in the Landes department.
